Stop the Bleeding

Advanced Trauma Life Saving (ATLS) and “Scoop and Run” have redefined the work of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Today, basic life-saving from the viewpoint of the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) means:

  1. To ensure that the victim's airway is clear.
  2. To prevent the victim from going into shock from blood loss.

Nothing else matters in emergency treatment if these two requirements are not met.

Therefore, bandages are among the first equipment to be used in emergency situations where injury is a result of external trauma. Sophisticated electronic equipment, machinery and pharmaceuticals, which are an integral part of emergency treatment, can only be used if the victim's bleeding is controlled.

Typically, ambulances are called to car accidents to treat the injured. In the EU alone, 1.2 million accidents with injuries were registered in 2005. The number of persons that were actually injured is higher. A car accident usually involves two or more cars with at least one person per car. For this reasons, EMS vehicles carry a large number of bandages. Usually, one ambulance carries at least 20 bandages.

Ambulances and fire fighters are also called to natural disasters like floods, storms and earthquakes. The onset of  terrorist activities in the US, Europe, India and other parts of the world further increases the number of bandages used by EMS.
